Illustration (Fig. 26) in "A Handbook to the National Museum under the direction of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington" is an engraving of the Ornithological Laboratory in the Smithsonian Institution Building which shows two ornithologists working at their desks. Along one side there are specimen cabinets, but no specimens are visible. The collections of birds occupied the lower main hall and the laboratory was located in a gallery of this hall.
