Photograph of the painting, placed on an easel, by James Roberts (1753 -c.1809) in 1786 of James Smithson as a student at Pembroke College, Oxford University, England. Smithson is wearing his university robes and seated in a chair. Smithson attended Pembroke College, Oxford University, from 1782 to 1786, studying geology and mineralogy. The painting was purchased in 1850 from the widow of John Fitall, Smithson's former servant to whom Smithson had granted an annuity. The original painting is located in the National Portrait Gallery collection.
