Portrait of Dr. William Henry Holmes, first curator and director of the National Gallery of Art of the Smithsonian, now the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, seated in a chair. It was painted in 1931 by E. Hodgson Smart. Dr. Holmes began his career as a scientific illustrator for the United States National Museum. After participating in several western exploring expeditions, he became a noted geologist. During those expeditions, he also became interested in Native American culture and subsequently became Curator of Anthropology in the National Museum and director of the Bureau of American Ethnology. He was also noted for his own art work including Washington, D.C. area landscapes and western panoramas.
