Thomas Lovejoy, ornithologist and a leading advocate for the preservation of the world's tropical rainforests, inspects a recently burned tract of rainforest near Manaus, Brazil in October 1986. Lovejoy was Assistant Secretary for External Affairs from 1987-1994.
