Summary

Chief Justice Warren Burger, chancellor of the Smithsonian since 1969 and who soon to retire from the United States Supreme Court, was awarded the James Smithson Medal at the Board of Regents' dinner September 14, 1986. Photograph shows (l-r): Secretary Robert McC. Adams, Vice President George H. Bush and Burger, as he received the Smithson medal and a citation for his long service to the Smithsonian.

Featured in TORCH, October 1986. The Smithson Medal was cast in 1965 for the bicentennial of James Smithson's birth. The medal was designed by Paul Vincze of London and was struck by the Medallic Company. The Smithson Medal is gold and the highest honor given by the Smithsonian Institution.
