Featured in TORCH, October 1986. The Smithson Medal was cast in 1965 for the bicentennial of James Smithson's birth. The medal was designed by Paul Vincze of London and was struck by the Medallic Company. The Smithson Medal is gold and the highest honor given by the Smithsonian Institution.
