Summary

A major Smithsonian Institution observatory at Mt. Hopkins, Arizona, opens. Located in the Santa Rita Mountains of Arizona, the site was chosen by Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory director Fred Lawrence Whipple, and development of the site began in 1966.
