Summary

The General Post Office Building was built between 1839 and 1859 and occupied the entire block between E, F and 7th and 8th Streets, N.W. The building was the first all-marble structure in Washington. It was later known as the Tariff Commission building. In 1984 the building was made available for use by the Smithsonian Institution but was not pursued. The building was later leased by General Services Administration to a group who converted the space into a hotel.
