Regent Carlisle Humelsine bestows the Order of James Smithson on Secretary S. Dillon Ripley after noting that the honor was specifically created for 'those rare individuals whose contributions to the Smithsonian measurably transcend existing honors for service to the institution.' Ripley became the third individual to receive the Smithson Order, symbolized by a newly designed medal of enamel and gold, bearing a bas-relief of the institution's founder. Ripley served as Secretary of the Smithsonian from 1964 to 1984.
