Charles Blitzer, Assistant Secretary for History and Art (1968-1983); Director of Education and Training (1965-1968). During Blitzer's tenure as assistant secretary, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the National Portrait Gallery were opened and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, the Archives of American Art and the Museum of African Art became part of the Smithsonian.
