Fred Lawrence Whipple, Smithsonian Astorphysical Observatory Director from 1955-1973, admires the new sign for the observing station located in Arizona renamed in his honor. The Whipple Observatory had previously been known as the Mt. Hopkins Observatory before it was renamed for Whipple in May 1982.
