Eighth Secretary (1964-1984) S. Dillon Ripley (1913-2001) presents the Freer Medal "For distinguished contribution to the knowledge and understanding of Oriental civilizations as reflected in their arts" to Professor Tanaka Ichimatsu of Tokyo, Japan, in recognition of his valuable contributions to the study and protection of Japanese art and that nation's cultural heritage, at a ceremony in the auditorium of Freer Gallery of Art, May 2, 1973.
