Summary

Oceanographic operations are elevated to a full-fledged office -- the Office of Oceanography and Limnology -- and are placed under the supervision of the Assistant Secretary for Science. As part of its mission, the office is responsible for the operation of the Smithsonian Oceanographic Sorting Center and the Mediterranean Marine Sorting Center (established September 1966).
