Postmaster General Winton M. Blount established letter mail service at the Smithsonian on September 27, 1971 by hand canceling a letter for Secretary S. Dillon Ripley at the opening of the reconstructed General Store/Post Office from Headsville, West Virginia in the National Museum of History and Technology, now the National Museum of American History.
