Summary

The Canal Zone Biological Area is renamed the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute indicating "how the activities and responsibilities of the bureau are increasing and becoming broader in scope." The change had been proposed in 1965 by Canal Zone Biological Area director Martin H. Moynihan. An official announcement was issued by Smithsonian Secretary S. Dillon Ripley on April 18, 1966, formalizing the change in name.
