Summary

A special staff of Museum assistants is first recognized whose duties are separate from the executive work of the Institution. In 1875, the office of curator is established and is held by the Assistant Secretary from 1875 to 1876. The position is then changed to Superindentent of the National Museum. Up to 1880 there is one curator with a number of assistants. The system of having designated curators dates to the time when preparations are being made for moving into the Arts and Industries Building.
