Summary

The first official National Portrait Gallery exhibition is shown in the Arts and Industries Building. The exhibit, "Nucleus for a National Collection," arranged by Curator Robert G. Stewart, opens for the bicentennial of James Smithson's birth, and consisted of 65 portraits by 52 artists. A catalogue of the exhibition was also compiled by Stewart.
