Summary

Smithsonian Secretary S. Dillon Ripley (1964-1984) presents James Smithson Society Gold Medal to Bern Dibner who donated to the Institution a library of 25,000 rare books in the history of science and technology. An engineer, inventor and industrialist, Dibner collected rare books for decades and established the Burndy Library in Norwalk, Connecticut, in 1936.
