Summary

Seventh Smithsonian Secretary Leonard Carmichael (1898-1973) retires after eleven years of service. A physiological psychologist from Tufts University, Carmichael came to the Smithsonian in January 1953. Carmichael is replaced by the ornithologist, S. Dillon Ripley.
