Dr. Edward Sylvester Morse (1838-1925) of Maine was a good friend and scientific colleague of S. Stillman Berry. Morse studied invertebrate zoology and also collected Japanese ceramics. During his tenure as director of the Peabody Academy of Sciences in Essex, Massachusetts, he had contact with several Smithsonian scientists.
