Frigate birds flying around Rocky Island in Panama Bay. Plankton collections were made near this spot attracted the birds. From 1910 to 1912, the Smithsonian participated in the Biological Survey of the Panama Canal Zone to document the natural history of the Canal Zone prior to construction of the Panama Canal. Dr. Charles D. Marsh, from the Bureau of Plant Industry, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), was a member of the field party and took this picture.
