The forest, at 5,200 feet elevation in the Pirri Mountains, eastern Panama, consists largely of palms and includes many tree ferns. From 1910 to 1912 the Smithsonian participated in the Biological Survey of the Panama Canal Zone, to document the natural history of the Canal Zone prior to construction of the Panama Canal. Mr. Edward Alphonso Goldman, from the Bureau of Biological Survey of the United States Department of Agriculture, was a member of the field-party and took this picture.
