Summary

In the 1880s, Robert Ridgway, Smithsonian Curator of the Division of Birds, sits at his desk located on the fifth floor of the South Tower, in the Smithsonian Institution Building, the "Castle". The room was reached by a flight of stone steps, which Ridgway delighted in bounding up two at a time. Ridgway worked in the South Tower from about 1875 to 1895.
