Installation of Steam Locomotive in NMHT

Summary

While the building is still under construction, the 1401, a 280-ton Pacific-type passenger steam locomotive, has been moved just inside the National Museum of History and Technology, now the National Museum of American History, and is being supported by wooden ties. The locomotive was built in 1926 by the Richmond, Virginia, works of the American Locomotive Company. The railroad car was too large to move into the building after it was completed and so was moved prior to completion of the exterior walls.
