Summary

The gunboat "Philadelphia" on exhibit in the National Museum of History and Technology, now the National Museum of American History. Built in 1776, "Philadelphia" is the oldest American fighting vessel in existence. She sank on October 11, 1776, in Lake Champlain during the battle off Valcour Island, when an American flotilla commanded by General Benedict Arnold was defeated by a British fleet. Visible is the 12 pounder gun mounted at the bow. The "Philadelphia" was raised in 1935 and came to the Smithsonian in 1964.
