The new cap for the North Tower of the Smithsonian Institution Building is being lowered into place on the top of the tower by a crane, 1970. The original roof was destroyed in the fire of January 24, 1865.
Historic Images of the Smithsonian
There are four photographs of the new North Tower Cap in this series. See Negative # 2005-8428 showing the cap on the ground, and Neg. #s 2005-8429 and 2005-8430 hoisting the top. The original negative number is 1626-18 but that negative could not be located on file. The original photograph was re-scanned and given new negative and digital file numbers.
