Summary

The new cap for the lower North Tower of the Smithsonian Institution Building is being raised into position by a crane. The original roof was destroyed in the fire of January 24, 1865.

There are four photographs of the new North Tower Cap in this series. See Negative # 2005-8428 showing the cap on the ground, and Neg. #s 2005-8429 and 2005-8430 hoisting the top. The original negative number is 1626-10 but that negative could not be located on file. The original photograph was re-scanned and given new negative and digital file numbers.
