Summary

The new cap for the lower North Tower of the Smithsonian Institution Building on the ground in front of the building before it is installed, 1970. A man is putting roofing paper on it before it is raised to the top of the tower. The original roof was destroyed in the fire of January 24, 1865.

There are four photographs of the new North Tower Cap in this series. See Negative # 2005-8428 showing the cap on the ground, and Neg. #s 2005-8429 and 2005-8430 hoisting the top. The original negative number is 1626-1 but that negative could not be located on file. The original photograph was re-scanned and given new negative and digital file numbers.
