Summary

Ira Michael Heyman, tenth Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, seated, was elected at the May 25, 1994, meeting of the Board of Regents. Heyman, a lawyer, was counselor to Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt. He also served as deputy assistant for policy at the Department of the Interior. He is best-known for his 10-year term (1980-1990) as chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley.
