The John Donnell Smith herbarium and botanical library are received by the United States National Museum. The 1,600 volume botanical library is deposited in the botany section of the USNM. The Museum also received 50,000 mounted plants constituting the remaining half of the Smith herbarium presented to the Smithsonian Institution in 1905, but until now remained for study in the custody of Smith in Baltimore. The Smith herbarium contains in total well over 100,000 specimens.
