Summary

Pembroke College, Oxford University, matriculation register, 1782. The entry for James Smithson reads, "Jacobus Ludovicus Macie, Col. Peur Avons Fils," which translates as James Lewis Macie. He was listed as a Gentleman Commoner, as he enrolled at Pembroke College, Oxford, May 7, 1782. Note that he wrote his name in Latin and used his mother's name, Macie (see item no. 7). He left the entry for father's name blank. He began using Smithson c. 1800.
