Smithsonian Secretary Alexander Wetmore visited Panama, 1946, to visit the Canal Zone Biological Area, inspect the San Jose Project of 1944, and collect bird specimens in Darien. Dr. James Zetek (1886-1959), entomologist and founding director of the Canal Zone Biological Area (CZBA), standing in front of one of the CZBA buildings on Barro Colorado Island, Canal Zone, Panama. The CZBA became part of the Smithsonian in 1946 and was later renamed the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. The image was taken by Alexander Wetmore, sixth Smithsonian Secretary and ornithologist, while conducting scientific research in the area.
