A large group of Toba Indian men, women and children are seen here standing in front of their portable homes in Las Palmas, Chaco, Argentina. Some of the homes have thatch roofs while others have what appears to be a corrugated metal. This photograph was taken by Alexander Wetmore, noted ornithologist and sixth Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1944-1952,while conducting field work for the United States Bureau of Biological Survey throughout the islands of the Caribbean and various Latin American countries.
