Photograph of the waterfront of Montevideo, Uruguay on June 20, 1920. In this picture, buildings can be seen in the distance with a relatively small boat in the center of the image. This photograph was taken by Alexander Wetmore, noted ornithologist and sixth Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1944-1952, while on the S.S. Callao. Secretary Wetmore conducted extensive fieldworkwhile conducting field work for the United States Bureau of Biological Survey. Wetmore conducted extensive fieldwork for the United States Bureau of Biological Survey throughout the islands of the Caribbean and various Latin American countries.
