Summary

The United States Congress appropriates $15,000 for urgent and necessary repairs to central and western portions of the Smithsonian Institution Building. This is expended in removing the combustible material in the west range. The reconstruction needed to accomplish fireproofing is entrusted to the architects, Cluss and Schulze. On August 7, 1890, Congress will appropriate $25,000 to fireproof the chapel of the west wing, repair the roof of the main building and the ceiling and plastering of the main hall.
