FY 1883 Appropriations for the USNM

For the fiscal year ending June 30, 1883, United State Congress makes the following appropriations to the National Museum (Stat. xxii): $6,000 for heating, lighting, and telephone service in the new Museum Building; $75,000 for preserving and exhibiting collections received from the exploring expeditions; $10,000 for the transfer of the collections presented to the United States from the Permanent International Exhibition in Philadelphia; $2,500 for the care of the Armory Building and its collections; and $60,000 for cases, furniture, and fixtures for the National Museum, and for salaries of all necessary employees. At the same time, the Smithsonian Institution receives appropriations of $35,000 for ethnological research, $5,000 for international exchanges, $300 for transportation of reports and maps to foreign countries for the War Deptartment, and $360.25 for freight on Naval Observatory publications sent to foreign countries.
