In 1784 James Smithson went on a geological tour of England and Scotland with the noted French geologist, Barthelemy Faujas de-St.-Fond, William Thornton, and the Italian Count Paolo Andreani. In this view, Smithson's party approaches the Isle of Staffa in the Hebrides from the northwest. Entrances to the Cave of Fingal and the Cave of the Comorants are also shown. This image is located opposite page 37 of volume 2. A similar image (95-20539) was inserted by the owner of the book but was not part of the original book.
