Summary

Front and back view of the Hodgkins Medal, awarded in honor of Thomas George Hodgkins, 1803-1892, who bequeathed an iniatial amount of $200,000, the income from a part of which was to be devoted "to the increase and diffusion of more exact knowledge in regard to the nature and properties of atmospheric air in connection with the welfare of man" to the Smithsonian in 1891. The Hodgkins Medal and Fund were established in 1893 in memory of Hodgkins who willed his fortune to the Smithsonian and stipulated that a portion be used to promote atmospheric research - research carried out today by the National Air and Space Museum and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The medal is awarded annually or biennially for 'important contributions to knowledge of the physical environment bearing upon the welfare of man.'
