In 1784 James Smithson went on a geological tour of England and Scotland with the noted French geologist, Barthelemy Faujas de-St.-Fond, William Thornton, and the Italian Count Paolo Andreani. In this view, a group approaches Fingals Cave on the Isle of Staffa in the Hebrides. The image is the frontispiece to volume 2. A similar illustration (95-20541) was inserted by the owner of the book, but was not part of original volume.
