Summary

Dr. Forrest C. (Forrest Carlisle) Pogue (1912-1996), stands in front of a portrait of Dwight D. Eisenhower holding a book. He became director of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Institute for Historical Research in the National Museum of History and Technology, now the National Museum of American History, in 1974. Pogue began gathering oral history long before it achieved popularity when he was recruited in 1944 to interview soldiers and junior officers at the front in northwest Europe. He accompanied the invasion forces into France and was awarded the Bronze Star and the French Croix de Guerre for "front line interviewing."
