Summary

The first bequest following that of James Smithson is received by the Smithsonian. The $1,000 bequest of James Hamilton of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, is deposited in the United States Treasury to the credit of the Smithson fund. On January 28, 1895, the Hamilton Fund is increased to $2,000 by deposit of accrued interest.
