Summary

The first meeting of the Smithsonian Material Culture Forum is held in March of 1988, devoted to "Headgear: How and Why People Decorate Their Heads." Speakers include: Mary Jo Arnoldi, National Museum of Natural History, "African Hats"; Ann Gunter, Freer Sackler Galleries of Art, "Ancient Persian Crowns"; Peter Jakab, National Air and Space Museum, "Flight Headgear"; Keith Melder, National Museum of American History, "Heads of State, States of Head"; Ellen Miles, National Portrait Gallery, "Colonial American Wigs"; Cynthia A. Hoover, National Museum of American History, organizer and moderator. The Material Culture Forum was organized by Hoover to promote discussion of issues relating to material culture among Smithsonian staff from different disciples and bureaus.
