PrintSection 8E of the Inspector General Act of 1978 is amended. The term "designated Federal entity" includes the Smithsonian Institution. Definitions are set forth concerning the following terms: head of the Federal entity; Office of Inspector General; and Inspector General. The Inspector General shall be appointed by the head of the designated Federal entity. Each Inspector General shall report to and be under the general supervision of the head of the designated Federal entity. The head of the designated Federal entity shall not prevent or prohibit the Inspector General from initiating, carrying out, or completing any audit or investigation, or from issuing any subpoena during the course of any audit or investigation. Provisions are delineated for the removal of an Inspector General and for the authorities of an Inspector General.

Title I of this Act may be cited as the "Inspector General Act Amendments of 1988".
