Summary

  • The sum of $9,125,000 is appropriated for the Smithsonian Institution for salaries and expenses including: preservation, exhibition, and increase of collections from Government surveying and exploring expeditions; international exchanges; anthropological researches among American Indians and natives of lands under the jurisdiction or protection of the United States; excavation and preservation of archeological remains; maintenance of the Astrophysical Observatory; administration of the National Collection of Fine Arts; administration, construction, and maintenance of laboratory and other facilities on Barro Colorado Island, Canal Zone; maintenance and administration of a national air museum; purchase, repair, and cleaning of uniforms for guards and elevator operators and uniforms for other employees; repairs and alterations of buildings; and preparation of manuscripts, drawings, and illustrations for publications.
  • The sum of $4,336,000 is provided for additions to the Natural History Building. For necessary expenses of preparing plans and specifications for remodeling the Civil Service Commission Building to make it suitable to house certain art galleries of the Smithsonian Institution, the sum of $400,000 is appropriated.
  • The sum of $1,932,000 is provided for the upkeep and operation of the National Gallery of Art including: protection and care of the works of art therein; payment in advance when authorized by the treasurer of the Gallery for membership in library, museum, and art associations or societies whose publications or services are available to members only, or to members at a price lower than to the general public; purchase, repair, and cleaning of uniforms for guards and elevator operators; uniforms for other employees; purchase or rental of devices and services for protecting buildings and contents thereof; maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds; and restoration and repair of works of art for the National Gallery.
