Summary

  • The sum of $2,300,000 is appropriated for the Smithsonian Institution for: preservation and increase of collections from the surveying and exploring expeditions of the Government; international exchanges; anthropological researches among the American Indians and the natives of Hawaii and the excavation and preservation of archeological remains; maintenance of the Astrophysical Observatory; administration of the National Collection of Fine Arts; administration, construction and maintenance of facilities on Barro Colorado Island, Canal Zone; maintenance and administration of a national air museum; personal services in the District of Columbia; traveling expenses; payment of claims pursuant to the Federal Tort Claims Act; printing and binding, including the report of the American Historical Association; and purchase and cleaning of uniforms for guards.
  • Also repairs and alteration of buildings; and preparation of manuscripts, drawings, and illustrations for publications. The sum of $1,087,700 is appropriated for salaries and expenses of the National Gallery of Art.
