Summary

  • The sum of $1,800,312 is appropriated for salaries and expenses for the Smithsonian Institution including: preservation, exhibition, and increase of collections from Government surveying and exploring expeditions; the system of international exchanges; anthropological researches among American Indians and natives of Hawaii and the excavation and preservation of archeological remains; maintenance of the Astrophysical Observatory; administration of the National Collection of Fine Arts; administration, construction and maintenance of facilities on Barro Colorado Island, Canal Zone; for planning of a national air museum; traveling expenses; the cost of penalty mail; printing and binding, including the report of the American Historical Association; purchase and cleaning of uniforms for guards; repairs and alterations of buildings; and preparation of manuscripts and illustrations for publications.
  • The sum of $949,426 is provided for salaries and expenses of the National Gallery of Art. Section 3709 of the Revised Statutes, or the Classification Act of 1923, shall not apply to the restoration and repair of works of art for the National Gallery of Art, the cost of which shall not exceed $15,000.
