Summary

  • The site for the Smithsonian Gallery of Art shall be designated by the National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the President shall assign a suitable tract of public land. A Smithsonian Gallery of Art Commission is created and comprised of: a member to be designated by the Regents of the Smithsonian Institution; the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution; a member to be designated by the Secretary of the Treasury; the Chairman of the National Capital Park and Planning Commission; the Chairman of the Commission of Fine Arts; the Chairman of the Joint Committee on the Library; the Chairman of the Committee on the Library of the House; and the Chairman of the Art Commission of the Smithsonian Institution. These members shall serve without compensation and the Commission shall terminate upon the submission to and approval by the Regents of the Smithsonian Institution.
  • The sum of $40,000 is appropriated for the Commission's expenditures. The Regents may, subject to the approval of the President, authorize the preparation of the site and the construction of the building, including approaches and landscaping of the grounds; The name of the building shall be the Smithsonian Gallery of Art and it shall be under the supervision and control of the Regents and the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Provisions are set forth for the maintenance of a worthy standard for the acceptance of art objects and the acceptance of donations and funds, and for the exhibition of objects of art. The Regents may appoint and fix the compensation and duties of a Director of the Gallery and other necessary employees. There are hereby authorized to be appropriated annually such sums as may be necessary to maintain and administer the Gallery.
