PrintBy exchange of notes Panama and the United States agree to grant the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) custodianship of Barro Colorado Nature Monument (BCNM). STRI was granted sole responsibility to act on behalf of Panama and the United States for the purpose of scientific research and for the protection of BCNM as agreed upon in the Agreement Pursuant to Article VI of the Convention on Nature Protection and Wildlife Preservation in the Western Hemisphere signed Sept. 9, 1977. STRI is authorized to employ scientific and support staff. Custodianship is granted for an initial period of five years to be extended for addition five year periods.
