Panama Law No. 57, Authorizing the contract between the Government of Panama and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

PrintIn 1974 the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) and the Government of Panama signed an agreement regarding STRI's legal status in Panama. The contract states that STRI shall carry out exclusively scientific research in the field of tropical biology and ecology, subject to notification to the Ministry of Health; STRI shall defray the entire cost of such research and may be requested to provide research reports to the Government of Panama free of charge; STRI is authorized to build offices, field stations, labs etc; STRI is exempt from certain taxes; STRI is exempted from laws regarding the protection of Panamanian workers; STRI will notify the Government of Panama of all foreign scientists; STRI is subject to the laws of Panama.
