Summary

The President transmitted reports from the Secretaries of State and Treasury on the subject of the Smithsonian Bequest as requested by the House on July 9, 1838. The Secretaries' reports include correspondence between Richard Rush and Secretary of State John Forsythe and between Richard Rush and Messrs. Clarke, Fynmore and Fladgate, attorneys for Madame de la Batut, the mother of the late Mr. Hungerford (the heir of Smithson), regarding her claim to the Smithson estate. The report also includes a summary of the proceedings in Chancery and the costs incurred in the prosecuting the suit.
