Summary

The act creating the National Portrait Gallery to function as a free public museum for the exhibition and study of portraiture and statuary depicting men and women who have made significant contributions to the United States. The National Portrait Gallery is to be transferred to the management of the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution. The Board may accept gifts on behalf of the National Portrait Gallery and is in charge of creating and dictating the functions of a National Portrait Gallery Commission. What sums are necessary to carry out this law are appropriated.
